The English Studies Department with its two majors: English Literature and English Professional Writing strive to train students in literature, language and writing (literary and professional). The department believes that since English is the global language of communication, and has become a major requirement in the job market, all students should improve their oral and written communication skill in English in order to be able to compete in the highly competitive job market in Oman and the region.
To accomplish this, the Department aims to instill the concept of life-long learning into the students. All the four pillars of language learning – listening, speaking, reading and writing – are integrated in the course delivery to ensure a balanced development of language skills. Students are encouraged to communicate only in English while on campus. The department offers a variety of course that give students the opportunity to enhance their intellectual curiosity, analytical and interpretive thinking, and expand their horizons as well through broad and intensive reading.
The students’ creative talents are also identified and enhanced through personal guidance, research and English Club activities. Discussion forums, debates and presentations are organized as part of the club activities to give the students a platform to express their ideas and project their talents and skills. Special emphasis is laid on maintaining an excellent rapport with the students through interaction and advising, which in turn serves to inspire them to strive for the best.
