WHAT IS COUNSELING?

The prime objective of counseling is to bring about a positive change in the life of students, to motivate and help students to be able to solve their problems, to build a rapport between student and teacher based on mutual trust and understanding, to instill a sense of confidence and belongingness in the students, and encourage students to set a goal in their life.

GOING FOR COUNSELING

Your first meeting with your counselor is an opportunity for you to talk about the difficulties you face, how they affect you and what you want to get from your counseling sessions. Most counseling sessions last about an hour.

Before your first counseling appointment, think about the following questions:

  • What difficulties would you like help with?
  • What do you hope to gain from counseling?

HOW COUNSELING WORKS

During your first meeting at CGO, our counselor asks students to describe their current concerns / situation and gather some background information.  By discussing your concerns with you, the counselor can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and actions, as well as suggesting ways to find your own solutions to your problems.

Students often meet with their counselors weekly, biweekly, or monthly, depending on each student’s needs and counselor availability.

Once students feel that the issues that brought them to counsel are no longer a major concern, they decide with their counselor how and when to end the counseling.

CAN COUNSELING HELP?

Sometimes a student has a number of problems that make life difficult. Usually, these problems are relatively temporary, but sometimes one problem is big enough to disrupt normal life. When this happens, it’s a good idea to call or stop by and make an appointment.

We offer counseling for various issues. Such as:

  • Difficulty adjusting to life at Bayan.
  • Anxiety related to academic work.
  • Lack of direction or feeling unsure about your chosen career.
  • Difficulty concentrating.
  • Feeling tired, fatigued; like everything takes a lot of effort.
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.
  • Feeling stressed or anxious.
  • Lack of assertiveness.
  • Low self-confidence.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The counselor’s office is a safe place to talk about feelings and learn to deal with it. You will not be criticized, interrupted, or judged while speaking. Your conversation will be kept completely confidential. This is a special and unique type of conversation where you can say exactly how you feel – completely honest – without worrying that you will hurt someone’s feelings, hurt a relationship or be punished in any way. Anything you feel – want – or need – can be expressed frankly.
