Programs offered

With a focus on producing generations of graduates who would not only work for, but also manage media institutions and thus contribute to the realization of Oman’s national development Visions, the Department of Media Studies offers a broad range of robust media and communication education that embraces specializations in Public Relations and Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism and Visual Communication at the Diploma, Bachelors and Masters levels.

Bachelor

The 4-year Bachelor program in Media Studies seeks to produce graduates with sufficient knowledge, talent and skills to serve the media and communication industry whether in government, the private sector or self-employment. The Public Relations specialization aims at arming students with adequate knowledge and industry-standard experience in corporate communication with the variety of publics and issues. In view of the changing media landscape, the Journalism major aims at producing graduates who are able to straddle both mainstream media work and the new social media that dwell largely on content creation. Similarly, the Broadcasting major takes into consideration the need to update traditional knowledge and skills in generating, writing, producing and presenting radio and television programs with the demands of new digital technologies in film-making, digital storytelling and podcasting etc. In a world that is increasingly visually-inclined, the Visual Communication major seeks to equip students with creative thinking, design methodology and industry-standard computer skills. The Advertising major, offered from the perspective of the latest industrial trends, embraces essential aspects of the integrated marketing communication model.

Diploma

Designed to serve the needs of students who seek a short-term educational experience, the 2-year Diploma program seeks to provide students with a balanced foundation of professional competencies involving media studies in general and the department’s overall specializations. Within this period, students are engaged with the basics of the latest media industry trends through both on-campus and field learning and training that ensures they are well-equipped for the job market and to return for a bachelor program if they so wish.

Masters

The Masters program in Media Studies provides students with the latest skills in communication and media studies pedagogy through a strategic, managerial, and analytical approach that stresses a blend of theoretical, research and industrial skills. Currently limited to Broadcasting, the program is envisaged to cover other areas of specialization in due course.
